Kelly Uyeda employs decorative pattern to explore how the habits and pleasures of observation animate her surroundings. Through her artwork, she depicts motifs drawn from textiles, architectural details and industrial design, divorcing them from their original functions to evoke diverse associations and sites of recognition. These motifs index a Canadian material landscape, yet they are imbued with a sensibility influenced by Japanese aesthetics and design. Uyeda’s paintings serve as an invitation to stretch our way of looking at everyday objects, connecting pattern to notions of domesticity and perceptual engagement. Uyeda received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph (2022) and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design University (2015).
